KANTAN was born out of Hisham's interests in the vast regional foods across Malaysia, his home country. This led him to bid farewell to the corporate world and try his hand at cooking professionally. Now Hisham is proud to be offering delicious regional Malaysian dishes (particularly Malaysia's east coast, from where his parents hail) that he has perfected for the foodies of Melbourne, the city he calls home.

The word 'Kantan' is the Malay name for the bright pink ginger torch flower, which is commonly used in traditional Malay and Peranakan dishes of Malaysia such as 'Assam Laksa' and 'Nasi Kerabu'. The flower has a very distinct fragrance and adds a peppery zing to any dish. Delicious.

We are proud to announce our new cafe, located in the heart of Fitzroy, at 256 Johnston Street.

The cafe first opened during stage 4 lockdown at the end of September 2020. We only had currypuffs and coffee to offer at that time. After that we made Hainanese Chicken Rice when the lockdown eased a bit. This went on for two weeks. Since then, our menu has grown to include a number of favourite Malaysian dishes like Mee Siam, Nasi Lemak, Roti Jala, Vegan Laksa, house made Teh Tarik, etc. If these are your favourites as well, why don't you catch us for lunch or dinner at these hours of the week:

Mon & Tues: Close

Lunch: Wed - Sun: 11.30am - 3pm

Dinner: Wed - Sun: 5pm - 9pm
